Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are based upon semiconductor technology and do not contain a filament or mercury, as do current lighting technologies. Around 1962, LEDs were originally put into limited practical use due to their approximate cost of $200.00 per LED. Today, LEDs are prevalent in almost every electronic device manufactured, with low grade indicator type diodes costing less than a penny each.
Until very recently, high quality, high intensity LEDs required for area lighting applications have only been available in limited quantities and at very high prices.
